The Path
At Château Malescot Saint-Exupéry in Margaux, France, the role of Managing Director has been Jean-Luc Zuger’s since 1994. In a family estate, continuity is part of the work itself: the Zugers acquired the property in 1955, and his tenure extends that line rather than replacing it. Taking over from his father, Roger Zuger, he carried forward an existing structure of stewardship, keeping the estate’s long memory active in the present.
The Work Today
At the Margaux property, the work under Jean-Luc Zuger is framed by restraint and precision rather than display. His own shorthand for that approach is plain: “Fruit, balance, and freshness are our guides.” Those terms point to a style that values ripeness without excess, structure without weight, and wines that keep their lift. Harvest decisions show the same practical bias. “I am not worried at all. The grapes are just fine. They are not ready yet, and I have no problems with rot yet. I would rather harvest ripe grapes under some rain than unripe ones under the sun.” The line is direct, but it reflects a working confidence in vineyard timing and in making the call when maturity is there to be taken. For a Managing Director, that kind of judgment is part of the job: reading the season, weighing risk, and trusting the right moment.
In Their Words “I am not worried at all. The grapes are just fine. They are not ready yet, and I have no problems with rot yet. I would rather harvest ripe grapes under some rain than unripe ones under the sun.” “Fruit, balance, and freshness are our guides.”
Acclaim
What defines Jean-Luc Zuger’s recognition is continuity over flash. Since 1955, the family has been part of the estate’s story, and three generations of work have gone into rebuilding and sustaining its reputation. His own period as Managing Director, from 1994 to the present, sits inside that larger effort: a long, measured commitment to preserving the estate’s identity through care, consistency, and adherence to its guiding principles.
