The Path

Agriculture school in Toulouse gave Jean-Michel Laporte the formal base; Mendocino County, California (1986) gave him the first field test, as an intern working abroad. That early placement set a pattern that stayed visible through the rest of his career: close reading of the vineyard, attention to timing, and a preference for action that is measured rather than theatrical. In 2018, he became director of Château Talbot, a role he holds today, bringing that same method to one of Bordeaux’s notable estates.

The Work Today

At Château Talbot in 2019, Jean-Michel Laporte’s work was built from a series of small, deliberate choices in the vines and the cellar. Leaves were removed earlier than before, opening the canopy and increasing aeration. In the cellar, early pump-overs were favored and late pump-overs reduced, changing extraction as fermentation moved on. Extraction itself came earlier as well, with the aim of avoiding dryness and astringency and keeping the texture supple.

In Their Words “Our perception of this vintage was ‘classical’ but this is more of a wine with real architecture, harmony and balance.” The terms here are structural. “Architecture” points to how a wine is put together; “harmony” and “balance” describe proportion rather than ornament. Jean-Michel Laporte is speaking like someone tracking how the parts of a wine relate to one another, not just how the wine first appears in the glass. Timing is the subject in this line. The focus is on allowing Cabernet Franc to mature fully and on the result that follows when that window is respected. The sentence values development over force, and completion over haste.
