After joining the family estate in Saint-Vérand, Beaujolais, in 2017, Jean-Étienne Chermette moved through Domaine du Vissoux by accumulation rather than rupture. Six years inside the same vineyards and cellar gave the work its own authority: by 2023, ownership and winemaking had come together, and the wines were under his direct hand. At that point, the estate’s responsibility had shifted from inheritance to practice.
The Climb
Jean-Étienne Chermette joined the family estate at Domaine du Vissoux in Saint-Vérand, Beaujolais (2017–2023), beginning his career there and shaping his early path among the vines. Those years established the framework of his craft and rooted him in the estate’s landscape and routines. The cellar work is defined by whole-cluster fermentation, semi-carbonic fermentation, local native yeasts, and élevage mainly in foudres and tanks, with the estate refusing chaptalization. Those choices set the tone of the wines: measured, lifted, and tied to place without excess polish. The range centers on Beaujolais wines, including cru bottlings and the estate's work in Morgon, where Morgon Les Micouds sits among the named wines associated with his hand. Origine Vieilles Vignes, the cuvée that introduced the estate's winemaking style, was renamed Origine by him in 2018, a small editorial change that clarified the estate’s modern identity. He has also described 2015 this way: "2015 has the structure of Côte du Rhône, but also the finesse of Burgundy."
