Coming Up
The technical base of a winemaking career often starts before the first harvest, and at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, Jim McMahon built the foundations that would carry through every cellar role that followed. That early training was then put to work at Kenwood Vineyards & Winery, where he served as Assistant Winemaker and worked close to the cadence of harvest, blending, and the slower decisions that shape wine before it leaves the cellar. Moving from support to authorship is a familiar step in this trade, and at Luna Vineyards, Jim McMahon took on the winemaker role and the added responsibility of defining wines from the ground up. The next shift broadened that scope again at William Harrison Vineyards & Winery, where he was General Manager and winemaker, a position that joined cellar work with a wider view of how a winery is run day to day. Today, Jim McMahon is a member of the winemaking team at Copper Cane. The role reflects a career built through successive cellar and management posts, with experience gathered across different estates and responsibilities and brought into a collaborative setting.
Where They Are Now
At Copper Cane, the work sits inside a team structure, and Jim McMahon’s role there draws on the accumulation of earlier cellar and management experience. After serving as Assistant Winemaker at Kenwood Vineyards & Winery, winemaker at Luna Vineyards, and General Manager and winemaker at William Harrison Vineyards & Winery, he brings both technical discipline and operational perspective to the present role.
