Where They Are Now

Since founding Tensley Wines in 1998, Joey Tensley has led the winery from Santa Barbara, California, with a steady hand and a narrow brief. That continuity has shaped the house style as much as any single vintage: the work stays attached to purpose, and the purpose stays attached to the fruit. Over time, the project has become less about display than about repetition, attention, and trust in what the vineyard already provides. The current role remains simple on paper: owner and winemaker in Los Olivos. In practice, it asks for both stewardship and interpretation, especially in California Rhônes, where flavor, structure, and texture have to sit in balance. Tensley’s approach is to preserve energy and shape together, so the wine feels complete without losing the mark of place. Joey’s signature wines include Colson Canyon Vineyard Syrah, All Blocks, Fundamental Chardonnay, Fundamental Pinot Noir, and Tensley Syrah.
