i. Biography
Joseph E. Dabney was an American author, journalist, and public relations professional from South Carolina who graduated from Berry College and later worked on newspapers in Georgia and South Carolina before joining Lockheed-Georgia in 1965. He is best known for writing about Southern food and drink traditions, including *Mountain Spirits* and *Smokehouse Ham, Spoon Bread & Scuppernong Wine*, which won the 1999 James Beard Cookbook of the Year Award and later helped earn him the Southern Foodways Alliance Lifetime Achievement Award.
