i. Biography
“I have come to appreciate the unique personality of each varietal with which I work. I combine this understanding with my scientific knowledge in pursuit of crafting the best wine possible.” That line explains the method behind Kris Curran’s work: varietal character first, technique in service of it. Raised in California’s Santa Ynez Valley, Curran brought that approach to Foley Estates Vineyard & Winery in Santa Ynez in 2008, with a cellar philosophy shaped by place and by the refusal to scrub out what the grape already gives.
The Climb
Formal study at California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo and California State University, Fresno (1996) gave Curran a technical base that later met years of site-by-site practice across Santa Barbara County and beyond. The sequence is straightforward: winemaker at Cambria Winery in Santa Barbara County, winemaker at Koehler Winery in Santa Barbara County, then the first winemaker at Sea Smoke Cellars in Santa Rita Hills (until 2008). Each role added range, but the throughline stayed consistent: attention to varietal distinction and the demands of place. That same discipline carried into Foley Estates Vineyard & Winery (2008–2010), where the work continued under the same terms: precision, curiosity, and restraint. Running alongside those roles, Curran Wines / D’Alfonso-Curran (since 1997) extends the perspective beyond a single estate, giving Curran a separate framework for thinking about how wines develop over time.
Today
The core idea in Curran’s work is simple: varietal difference is not a problem to be edited out, but the point of the work itself. The style reads as methodical rather than showy, with scientific rigor used to clarify character instead of flattening it.
Signature
Kris Curran works with Pinot Noir and Spanish grape varieties. The pairing points to a winemaker working in structure, texture, and clear varietal expression, with enough control to keep delicacy and depth in balance.
In Their Words “I have come to appreciate the unique personality of each varietal with which I work. I combine this understanding with my scientific knowledge in pursuit of crafting the best wine possible.” “I age my wines longer in barrel than most producers (20-40 months on average, depending on varietal), so I prefer barrels that can integrate over longer periods of time.”
Recognition
Recognition in Curran’s career comes through appointments that signal trust and responsibility more than a list of prizes. Being named the first winemaker at Sea Smoke Cellars in Santa Rita Hills, then moving in 2008 to Foley Estates Vineyard & Winery in Santa Ynez, shows a progression through demanding roles in the same California region where the work began. The positions themselves tell the story: a winemaker brought in to shape identity from the start, then called on to apply the same discipline at another respected estate. The 1996 education at California State University, Fresno sits alongside California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo as the formal groundwork for a career that bridges study and cellar work.
