The Path

At Germany, Leo Hillinger trained in an early chapter that set the direction of his work in wine and established the disciplined approach that followed. Since 1990, he has been the winegrower of Weingut Leo Hillinger, carrying his parents' wine business forward with inherited ground underfoot and personal resolve in the work. That responsibility has also expanded into ownership and development: today, Leo is the owner and developer of his parents' wine business, guiding it with the same continuity that has marked his career. The line through his work is steady rather than dramatic, rooted in Jois and shaped by years of sustained attention.

The Work Today

In Jois, Leo Hillinger's work as winegrower keeps the business and sensory sides of wine in the same frame. For him, product and market are tied together rather than set apart. “I have a very good product and very good marketing; a bad product with good marketing leads quickly to collapse.” The point is direct: standards matter, credibility matters, and quality has to hold up on its own. He also describes wine in tactile terms. Wine, in his telling, is “Not only to drink the wine, but also to live it, to feel it, and to experience it with all our senses.” That view places the finished bottle inside a broader practice of attention, where rigor and feeling are both part of the work.
