i. Biography
“There’s no future for us hoteliers if we don’t engage with businesses and the culture of our neighbourhood.” The working rule places hospitality in contact with its setting. In Loh Lik Peng’s practice, the hotel is not treated as a sealed room, and the restaurant is not treated as a detached stage. Both are read against the street, the building, and the trade around them.
Coming Up
Training at University of Sheffield and London School of Economics put argument, structure, and scrutiny before hospitality became Loh Lik Peng’s better-known field. Corporate litigation in Singapore from 1997 added a procedural discipline: exact language, risk, sequence, and consequence. The later move into hotels and restaurants did not discard that formation; it redirected it toward sites, facades, histories, and the communities around them. Adaptive reuse became the first clear expression of that method at Hotel 1929 in Keong Saik Road, Singapore. The address was part of the work. It placed the property inside a neighbourhood with its own pressure, memory, and commercial life. The useful question was not how to erase the building’s past, but how to put it back to work in the present. A portfolio-led form of hospitality is now carried through Unlisted Collection, where Loh is founder and CEO. The role is less about a single house style than about selection: which building, which street, which dining room, and how the guest’s experience is shaped by the relationship between place and operation.
Where They Are Now
Hotel and restaurant work across Singapore, London, Shanghai, and Sydney gives Unlisted Collection a wide map, but the discipline remains local in application. In Loh Lik Peng’s current role as founder, the work depends on reading a street, a building, and a dining room as connected parts of the same brief. The hotel and the restaurant operate as neighbouring forms of hospitality rather than separate categories. One manages arrival, shelter, and rhythm; the other manages appetite, encounter, and time spent at the table. In Loh’s portfolio, the value of that connection is measured by whether the operation stays responsive to the neighbourhood immediately around it. Context is the test across Singapore, London, Shanghai, and Sydney. Those cities cannot be handled as interchangeable settings. The work attached to Loh Lik Peng is built around that constraint: a portfolio may travel, but each project still has to answer to its own street, building, and local grain.
Honors
The dated marker is 2015, when The Old Clare Hotel in Sydney and Automata in Sydney entered the arc of Loh Lik Peng’s work. That year sits alongside addresses in Singapore, London, and Shanghai, positioning the recognition around a chain of hospitality sites rather than a single room. The reputation is attached to a set of places: Hotel 1929, the London chapter that includes Town Hall Hotel and Viajante, the Shanghai presence of Table No. 1, and Singapore venues that keep the work close to its starting ground. Read together, they show a shift from legal training into hotels and restaurants where buildings, neighbourhoods, and guests are treated as active parts of the operation.
