Training at Istituto Umberto Primo gave Luca Paschina the technical base he carried into U.S. Winemaking, along with the habits that come with generations of viticultural memory: structure, discipline, and attention to detail. In 1990, he worked as winery consultant at Barboursville Vineyards in Barboursville, Virginia, USA (1990), and that brief assignment became the start of a longer stewardship. The estate offered him a place where inherited method and Virginia terroir could be tested against one another. Today, Luca is general manager and winemaker of Barboursville Vineyards (since 1990), a role that ties cellar work to the broader task of maintaining an estate’s identity over time. The position asks for both daily precision and long-range judgment, and his continuity has given Barboursville a clear line of development from vintage to vintage.

Where They Are Now

Blending and aging the estate’s wines in Barboursville, United States is where much of that identity is made legible. These are slower, less visible decisions, but they carry the weight of the finished wine: patience, restraint, and timing. In that part of the work, Luca Paschina’s advantage is perspective — the kind that treats depth, balance, and poise as outcomes of process, not decoration.
