Nikki Silva

The Essentials Peabody Award winner Nikki Silva built her name with The Kitchen Sisters, and the work is defined by listening as a discipline: intimate in scale, exacting in construction, and attentive to what survives in voice and memory. Oakland, California is part of that method. Silva has said, “I grew up in Oakland,” and the city’s pace and texture register in the work’s practical curiosity and close attention to speech. Family lineage also sits inside the craft. Silva has described herself as “an only child, but I come from a big, extended Portuguese family with lots of cousins,” and that overlap of many voices moving through one household appears in the way she thinks about sound. She has also said, “My mom was a great influence on me - she was a great storyteller,” placing oral tradition at the center of her approach. Even the technical start of the work points to that mix of resourcefulness and precision: “We taught ourselves how to cut quarter-inch reel to reel audio tape with a razor blade and Scotch tape.”
