Portrait of Nora Fitzgerald Belahcen
i. Biography
Founding president of Amal (Marrakech) since 2013, Nora Fitzgerald Belahcen works from a lived understanding of dual identity rather than a single fixed line of belonging. Moroccan and American, she has put that tension plainly: “Belonging is an important theme in my life because I can't legitimately say I'm just Moroccan and I can't say I’m American either.” Read as a working principle, the line frames her approach to institution-building: identity can hold more than one inheritance without losing coherence.

The Climb
Since 2012, Nora Fitzgerald Belahcen has founded and led Amal Women's Training Center and Moroccan Restaurant, Marrakesh, Morocco. The structure of the place matters: training and hospitality share the same roof, and the name Amal carries the work of welcome without separating it from livelihood. Her model treats dignity as something practiced in daily service, not as an abstract principle set apart from the work itself.
Today
Since 2013, she has also served as Founding President. The programme aim is stated plainly: “In our programme, I want women to come away feeling that they deserve to be there, they deserve to take up space, they deserve resources and time.” That emphasis on deserving is operational, not rhetorical. It places access, confidence, and time inside the remit of the programme, and makes women’s presence in the room part of the work rather than its byproduct.
In Their Words “In our programme, I want women to come away feeling that they deserve to be there, they deserve to take up space, they deserve resources and time.” “Belonging is an important theme in my life because I can't legitimately say I'm just Moroccan and I can't say I’m American either.”
Recognition
World’s 50 Best Restaurants Champions of Change Award sits with the rest of Nora Fitzgerald Belahcen’s record as recognition of infrastructure, not spectacle. The work has been about making a place where women can train, earn, and take their place without having to reduce themselves first. The award marks that kind of impact: sustained, practical, and built around belonging as a condition of work.
