Harvest work in Mâconnais in 1977 put Olivier Merlin into the daily pace of vineyard labor before he ever settled into domaine management. That early shift was followed by a winemaking post at a cooperative in Jura, a practical training ground that reads clearly in the discipline of his later work. Since 1987, he has been winemaker of Domaine Merlin in La Roche-Vineuse, France, where consistency has come through repetition, restraint and close attention to the demands of the region.

Where They Are Now

Since 1987, Olivier Merlin has made wine at Domaine Merlin with a method built on patience, precision and respect for the vineyard. The work is manual by design: “Unlike my colleagues in the Mâconnais, we do everything by hand.” He does not reject present-day tools, but he uses them in service of a style he places in continuity with older practice: “We might apply modern technology, but we make our wines in the same way as they were made 200 years ago.” The wines are shaped by observation and by what the land reveals, rather than by heavy intervention.

Signature

Among Olivier Merlin's signature wines are Mâcon La Roche Vineuse Vieilles Vignes, Mâcon-Roche-Vineuse, Pouilly-Fuissé 1er Cru Les Chevrières, and Saint-Véran Cuvée Grand Bussière. Taken together, they show the range of his cellar work without pushing for effect: wines that lean on clarity, texture and a measured hand. The common thread is a firm attachment to place, with each bottle carrying its origin plainly and without ornament.
