Richie Allen trained at University of Adelaide, building the foundation for a career shaped by hands-on experience and a clear command of craft. He went on to work as a weekend worker in the cellar door and tasting room at Penfolds Magill Estate, where the early rhythm of the wine world sharpened his path. Today, Richie is winemaker of Rombauer Vineyards (since 2004), bringing that steady progression from study to cellar-door experience into a long-standing role at the winery.

Today

Allen is Director of Viticulture and Winemaking at Rombauer Vineyards in Napa Valley. The role places vineyard and cellar responsibility under one professional brief, and his current tenure began in 2004. That continuity is the central fact of his career. The move from Melbourne, Australia, to Adelaide-trained winemaker led to a single long-running American winery appointment.

In Their Words “Summer 1998 I was in California and happened to go winetasting. It was the first time I had 2 wines side by side. After that what started as a hobby, slowly became a passion and eventually a career.” “After getting back to Australia I immersed myself in everything wine. I moved to Adelaide to study winemaking and the rest is history.”
