The Path
The working ground of Fronsac is where Stéphane Derenoncourt’s practice was first formed, with the vineyard setting the terms of the job: row work, seasonal pressure, and the physical demands of harvest. Between 1982 and 1985, he worked as a harvest worker at various vineyards in Fronsac, then moved from field labor into a steadier estate role as an employee at Château Fronsac from 1985 to 1987. That sequence matters in wine because it builds familiarity with both the vineyard’s pace and the cellar’s discipline. The cellar years followed in a direct line. From 1987 to 1990, he worked at Château La Fleur Cailleau, then from 1990 to 1996 at Château Pavie-Macquin. Those posts placed Stéphane Derenoncourt inside the routines that define wine after the fruit is picked: fermentation management, timing, observation, and the accumulation of judgment that comes only from repeated work. By the time he became winemaker at the estates of Stephan von Neipperg, including Château Canon-la-Gaffelière and La Mondotte, from 1996 to 1997, the progression from vineyard hand to cellar worker to winemaker was already established. His scope widened in 1997, when he began consulting for numerous estates in Bordeaux and other wine producers worldwide. That consulting work, paired with co-founding Vignerons Consultants in 1999 and serving there until 2010, shows a career moving from estate-level execution into advisory work across multiple properties. Since 2006, he has also been member of the buying team of Montesquieu Wines, adding selection to a profile already shaped by production and consultation. The international side of the practice became more visible in 2008, when he became consultant at Rubicon Estate Winery in Napa Valley. In 2009, he became owner of Derenoncourt California, and since 2010 he has been associate and consultant of Derenoncourt Consultants while also serving as owner of Domaine de l'A. vineyard labor, cellar work, estate winemaking, consulting, buying, and ownership, each role building on the last.
