i. Biography
American chef Terry Bryant’s work has always moved past the plate. Raised in Mississippi and Memphis, he learned early in places where rural and urban agriculture were part of everyday life that access to fresh, locally grown food shapes a community’s health, memory, and dignity. That understanding runs through his practice: cooking as craft, and as a way to teach young people to feel empowered and to work against food apartheid.
The Climb
The line from study to practice is clear in Terry Bryant’s career. He trained at Xavier University of Louisiana and New York University, building a foundation for work that moves between education, advocacy, and the creative possibilities of food. In his hands, the kitchen is not a sealed environment; it is a site of exchange where ideas can be tested, histories can be honored, and confidence can be built one lesson at a time. From 2015–2022, Terry served as Chef-in-Residence at Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco, a role that placed food alongside cultural storytelling and public engagement. The work there extended beyond service. It used cooking as a way to invite young people into larger questions of agency, nourishment, and equity, with access and education treated as inseparable parts of the same conversation. He then moved into 2022–2023 as Artist Fellow / Visiting Scholar at UC Berkeley, carrying that practice into a different setting without changing its terms. The title fits the scope of Bryant’s work: part maker, part thinker, part teacher. Across that appointment, the focus stayed on culinary work as a means of exploration, with its social stakes kept visible. Today, Terry is founder and editor-in-chief of 4 Color Books and co-principal and Innovation Director of Zenmi. Those roles widen the frame rather than leave the kitchen behind. The same questions continue to drive the work: who gets access, who gets to participate, and how food can help young people see themselves differently.
Today
Cooking remains part of his public work, and Bryant continues to use it as a bridge between nourishment and empowerment. In his approach, it is not just a skill to be mastered, but a language for teaching young people to feel capable, to understand the systems around them, and to work against food apartheid. That is the shape of his practice across institutions, editorial work, and innovation-focused leadership.
