Tim Shand’s path to Voyager Estate runs through Clare Valley training, a stint at Giant Steps, and a long stretch at Punt Road in Victoria’s Yarra Valley before landing in Margaret River as Chief Winemaker in 2022. The line is short on ornament and long on progression: cool-climate work, regional breadth, then an estate where Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon sit at the center of the program.
The Climb
Training in Clare Valley gave Tim Shand a base before the work moved into some of Australia’s better-known wine regions. The sequence is clear in the record: winemaker at Giant Steps from 2011 to 2014, then head of winemaking at Punt Road in Victoria's Yarra Valley from 2014 to 2022. In 2022, Shand took on the role of Chief Winemaker at Voyager Estate in Margaret River, where he is based now.
Today
Since 2022, Shand has served as Chief Winemaker at Voyager Estate. On joining the winery, he said, "Joining Alex and her knowledgeable team as Chief Winemaker at this point in the winery's evolution is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me, and I cannot wait to get started." Voyager Estate places Estate Chardonnay among its signature wines, and Estate Cabernet Sauvignon as well. In Shand’s role, those two wines sit alongside the estate’s broader work in Margaret River, with white and red expressions carrying equal weight in the portfolio. In 2025, that wine was described as a certified organic, single estate red that weaves together distinct varieties into a singular voice of southern Margaret River. The winemaking line attached to Shand is plainspoken: "Respect for the raw materials is everything, finding the beauty and deliciousness in the fruit that is grown and expressing them to drinkers with the lightest possible touch." That is a fruit-led approach, with restraint doing the heavy lifting.
