Tom Lane

The Climb

Study and repetition formed the base of Tom Lane’s cellar work, with Chico State University, Kansas State University, and Ohio State University giving him the academic footing for a career in wine. From there, the craft moved into practice in California wine country, where technique and patience carry equal weight. At Navarro Vineyards (1985–1992), Lane entered the profession as winemaker; at Concannon Vineyard (1992–2005), he extended that work over a longer run, refining his sense of style, structure, and the discipline that sits behind both. Since 2005, Tom Lane has served as winemaker at Bianchi Winery in Paso Robles, a role that reflects a career shaped by steady stewardship rather than display. The authority in that work comes from years spent reading grapes, seasons, and the possibilities they present.

Today

Syranot, one of the central wines from Lane’s time at Bianchi, is built from Syrah and Pinot Noir. The blend depends on contrast: Syrah supplies the darker, weightier side, while Pinot Noir brings a more filigreed edge. Lane has described the wine as answering a call for adventurous, unique wines, which fits the uncommon pairing and the deliberate tension at its center. His preference for Syrah is stated plainly: "Syrah – because it is a heavy red wine with delicate aromas." The line points to a clear way of working, where richness can still carry perfume and depth does not have to flatten nuance. That kind of balance is what allows a wine to stand apart without losing precision. "The best part is that the job is so incredibly varied." In Lane’s case, that variety reads as part of the trade itself: seasons shift, decisions change, and each vintage asks for a different response. The work remains as variable as it is demanding.
