The Path

At the School of Viticulture and Oenology in Cognac, Vincent Chansault trained in the fundamentals that shape a working winemaker: close observation, technical discipline, and attention to place. That foundation carried into a career built across regions, where each stop added to his reading of grape variety, climate, and blend structure. In the Loire Valley, the Rhône, and Languedoc, he accumulated winemaking experience that widened the frame without changing the core method: understand what the site is giving, then work with it clearly. Before Domaine Gayda, the role of winemaker at Boekenhoutskloof in Franschhoek, Stellenbosch area, South Africa extended that perspective again. The movement from Cognac to western and southern wine regions, then into South Africa, gives Vincent Chansault’s path a practical range. The constant across those posts is not style for its own sake, but the repeated work of turning difference into coherence without ironing out character.

The Work Today

At Domaine Gayda in Brugairolles, France, since 2004, the work has sat at the point where structure meets improvisation. As winemaker and Technical Director, Vincent Chansault works on blends from different regions of Languedoc and Roussillon, using the contrasts between those southern territories as material rather than complication. The task is to hold tension and generosity in the same frame, so the wines read as composed without becoming rigid. Figure Libre Freestyle 2021 shows that method in cuvée form. The wines carry the freedom implied by the name, but the freedom is disciplined: each component is kept in play while still serving the whole. Chansault’s own words are direct about the method: “Because the diversity of terroirs and climates in this region fascinates me, I wanted, with a certain greed for discovery, to experiment with the potential of this patchwork.”

Signature

Vincent Chansault’s signature lies in the Figure Libre Freestyle line: Figure Libre Freestyle 2021, Figure Libre Freestyle Blanc, Figure Libre Freestyle Rouge, and Figure Libre Chenin Blanc. Taken together, these cuvées mark a style built around blends, regional contrast, and enough restraint to let each wine keep its own register. The result is not sameness across the range, but a consistent approach to how different components are brought into alignment.
