Twice through the rows

Twice a year, Claudio Viberti passes with a trimmer as winemaker at Azienda Agricola Rocche Viberti in Rocche, Castiglione Falletto, Italy. He is plain about the other decision: no herbicide. That vineyard gesture sits close to the way he speaks about the estate, with family, land, cellar, and table held together rather than separated into departments. His grandfather established the family work in 1946, and Viberti, a third-generation vigneron, took leadership in 2002. His first official vintage followed in 2003.

The station is Barolo country, and the work centers on Nebbiolo without turning away from Barbera and Dolcetto. Viberti’s own line for Buon Padre, “Buon Padre is not just a wine, it is the bond with our family and our land,” gives the measure of the place better than a technical sheet would. The estate remains small enough that the maker’s hand is not an image. It is the farming pass, the cellar decision, the tasting table, and the long memory of a family name carried through Rocche di Castiglione.

Large casks and Langhe varieties

The estate works 4.5 hectares and produces about 20,000 bottles per year, a scale that keeps the program close to the rows. The emphasis falls on classic Langhe varieties: Nebbiolo for Barolo DOCG, with Barbera and Dolcetto completing the range. The stated philosophy is sustainable, and Viberti’s own vineyard note makes the point without flourish: he trims, and he does not use herbicide.

In the cellar, the house is known for long aging in large casks. That choice matters in Barolo, where Nebbiolo needs time, oxygen, and restraint rather than a loud imprint of wood. The wines are described through purity and refinement, not volume. Rocche di Castiglione gives the estate its name and its anchor, while the portfolio also reaches Bricco Boschis and San Defendente through Barolo bottlings tied to those places. The cellar program keeps the frame traditional: still red wines, Nebbiolo-led, built for patience in cask and bottle.

A quiet cellar in the Rocche hills

The winery sits in the Rocche area of Castiglione Falletto, a rural hillside setting with vineyards around it and a cellar arranged for guided visits, tastings, and direct sales. The room is quiet by nature. There is no sense here of a polished stage laid over the work; the estate is family-run, compact, and rural, with the tasting room and the cellar close to the barrels and the rows that feed them.

Large casks set the tone inside. The pace belongs to fermentation, aging, and the slow turn of releases rather than service theatre. A seated tasting can move from Dolcetto and Barbera toward Langhe Nebbiolo and Barolo, but the center of gravity remains the same: Nebbiolo from this slope, handled by a producer who has kept the family estate in motion since 2002.
