Her bench is not a restaurant pass or a broad cellar program, but a small set of decisions around nebbiolo, barbera, harvest timing, and the room in which a guest comes to understand the wine. Born in Finland, Sukula came to Piedmont through wine buying for a Finnish import company, then stayed with the question that still frames the work: how the land tastes in the glass. She describes herself as a wine and hospitality “Jackie-of-all-trades,” a phrase that fits the estate without softening it. The role asks for viticulture, tasting, language, service, and commercial judgment in the same day. Established in 2006, Azienda Agricola Sukula remains small enough that scale is part of the method. The estate works inside Barolo DOCG, with Meriame Barolo DOCG and Barolo Serralunga d'Alba ‘Meriame’ as the clearest signatures of the house.

Nebbiolo and barbera kept narrow

The program is built around two grapes, nebbiolo and barbera, and the discipline of not widening the frame. Annual production is about 4,500 bottles, a figure that changes the feel of every task: pruning, picking, sorting, fermenting, choosing what the vintage can carry. The farming philosophy is organic, and the wines sit in the register of still red Piedmont rather than in a broad portfolio made for range. Sukula makes the wines at the Giorgio Rivetti winery in Grinzane Cavour, a practical arrangement that gives this small estate access to the cellar work it needs while keeping its own scale intact. Barolo asks for patience before it asks for polish. Nebbiolo brings tannin, perfume, and the long finish that can make Serralunga d'Alba feel severe when handled without restraint. Barbera brings another form of attention, more immediate in fruit, still tied to acidity and place. Sukula's task is to let those differences remain visible, not to press them into one house style.

The tasting room is the house

The place reads less like a large winery than a working home set among Langhe vines. The tasting room is domestic in scale, quiet, and close to the vineyard view, so the conversation has the pace of a cellar visit rather than a public room. Glasses land on the table with the landscape still in sight. That matters here, because Sukula's work keeps returning to terrain, not as scenery but as the material behind structure, aroma, and finish. Serralunga d'Alba gives the wines their frame; the house gives them their speaking distance. Nothing about the estate asks to be amplified. Under 2 hectares, nebbiolo and barbera are enough, and the clearest close is still Meriame Barolo DOCG.
