Matt Holmes reads the cellar quietly as winemaker at Bannockburn Vineyards in Geelong, returning to a site that had already given him his first working measure of pace and scale. Holmes’s practice is less a change of direction than a continuation of what the estate asks for, a steady reading of site and process. Twenty six blocks over limestone

The estate works from 26 vineyard blocks in the Moorabool Valley, set on low-fertility, well-draining soils over limestone bedrock. That geology is not background scenery; it is part of the method. Bannockburn’s reputation rests on close-planted vines, among some of Australia’s oldest, and on wines shaped to carry the vineyard rather than a cellar signature placed over it.

The program is organic in philosophy and small in scale, with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Gamay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in the ground. Its centre of gravity remains Burgundian in feeling: still white and still red wines, made with the discipline that asks fruit, soil and season to speak before the winemaker does. Holmes’s task is to keep that reading clear. The work is in the small adjustments, the point at which attention becomes restraint.

The cellar and the valley stay quiet

The place carries itself with calm. In the tasting room, the mood is refined and quiet, closer to a working estate than a performance of hospitality. The vineyard setting does much of the speaking: Moorabool Valley light, low-fertility ground, limestone beneath, blocks held close enough to remind the visitor that this is a farm before it is a label.

That quiet suits the cellar. Bannockburn’s craft depends on patience and on an absence of flourish, which is why Holmes’s return feels coherent rather than decorative. The room, the vineyard and the glass all point back to the same discipline: estate fruit handled with care, not noise.
