Old vines selected grape by grape

Gravity before the tank
The fruit moves by gravity toward 2,500-liter tanks while Martina Prieto Pariente, winemaker at Bodegas Prieto Pariente in Seca, keeps the work close to the vineyard. She co-founded the house in 2013 after a search for old and exceptional parcels beyond the family’s established Verdejo ground in Rueda. The project stays deliberately small, built around recovered vineyards across Castilla y León and the Sierra de Gredos rather than a single estate block. Its language is parcel, soil, climate, selection.
Prieto Pariente’s lineage matters here because she has not treated inheritance as a fixed script. Since 2017, she has also served as Technical Director at Bodegas José Pariente in La Seca, Valladolid, a parallel station defined by precision and continuity. At Bodegas Prieto Pariente, the gesture changes. The bench is broader, stretching from Valladolid along the Duero River to Bierzo and the granite and slate country of Gredos, with Tempranillo, Garnacha, Godello, Viognier, and Cabernet Sauvignon handled as separate readings of place. Her own statement gives the house its discipline: wines that express each soil and each climate through delicate winemaking, sustainable viticulture, and respect for roots.
Old vines, handled one by one
The method begins before the cellar. The team harvests by hand and makes a first selection in the field, keeping damaged or unripe fruit out of the bins before it reaches the winery. The grapes then rest for several hours in a refrigerated chamber, a cooling step used to preserve freshness and aromatic detail before fermentation. A second manual selection follows at the sorting table, grape by grape.
The old-vine material gives the program its weight. Tempranillo and Garnacha parcels include plantings from 1941, 1950, 1955, 1924, 1946, and 1956; Viognier in La Seca was planted in 1999, and Godello comes from a north-facing mountain slope in Cabañas Raras. Fermentations are spontaneous, using the yeasts on the skins. Pressings stay light, macerations long and gentle. Aging runs between 12 and 18 months in French oak barrels, foudres, demi-muids, and oval concrete tanks, each vessel chosen to let structure form without pulling the wine away from its origin.
A cellar for separate origins
The cellar reads as a place of separation rather than display. Fruit from Mucientes, Pedrosa del Rey, La Seca, Bierzo, and the Sierra de Gredos arrives with different skins, acids, soils, and weather behind it; the work is to keep those distinctions legible. The room is quiet because the decisions are quiet. Sorting, cooling, gravity, native fermentation, and the vessel program do not announce themselves to a visitor the way a large facility might. They show in the pace of the hands.
That restraint suits a winery built around rescued vineyards. Bodegas Prieto Pariente does not ask its sites to behave alike, and Martina Prieto Pariente does not flatten them into a house flavor. The close attention is in the divide between O Chan Godello, Viognier, and the Garnacha and Tempranillo parcels, each held to its own soil and climate.
