The harvest moves in the cool of the night, before the plateau gives back its heat. Pedro Escudero, winemaker at Bodegas Pedro Escudero in Seca, works from La Seca with fruit grown close to the bodega, keeping maker, house and vineyard in the same frame. His name on the bottle is not a flourish; it is the organizing fact of the cellar.

The estate belongs to a fourth-generation family line in Rueda DO, with its work centered on Fuente Elvira, a rocky site outside the village. Escudero’s station is winemaking, but the practice begins before the press, in viticulture shaped by pebble soils, cool wind and the discipline of picking when the fruit can arrive with its aromas intact. The house language is direct: Verdejo and Viura from its own ground, handled with a preference for natural growing and clean expression rather than ornament.

Seventy-five hectares in pebble soil

The vineyard scale is precise enough to read as method. Bodegas Pedro Escudero works about 75 hectares at Fuente Elvira, with 65 hectares planted to Verdejo and 10 hectares to Viura. The site sits on a high plateau, where clay and sand lie under pebbles and gravel. Those stones hold daytime warmth into the night; the wind keeps freshness in the berries. In Rueda, that combination matters, especially for whites that need structure without losing cut.

The family approach avoids fertilizers and chemical treatments in the vineyard. Once the fruit comes in, the cellar keeps the sequence restrained: gentle pressing for clear must, fermentation under constant temperature control, then aging on the lees for creaminess and texture. Steel tanks and wooden barrels both have a place in the program, depending on the wine. Valdelagunde Verdejo carries the monovarietal line; Valdelagunde Cuvée Especial Verdejo gives the house a broader register, with assembly and barrel influence named plainly in the wine’s own title.

A quiet cellar above La Seca

The place has the feel of a working family estate rather than a staged room. Outside, the vineyards spread across a bare, stony landscape just beyond La Seca, a Rueda plateau of wide light, hard soil and low rural noise. Inside the cellar, the attention is on white-wine handling: fruit protected from heat, must kept clean, lees left to do their slow work.

That restraint gives the bodega its texture. The tasting room may receive the visitor, but the character of the place comes from the cellar and the vineyard beside it, from tanks, barrels, night-picked grapes and the repeated naming of Valdelagunde. If the next release continues the house’s argument, it will likely do so through the same concrete vocabulary: Fuente Elvira, Verdejo, Viura, Valdelagunde Cuvée Especial Verdejo.
