A cellar put into the ground

Earth came out before the cellar took its shape. Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, winemaker at Bodegas Vinícola Real in Logroño y alrededores, Albelda De Iregua, Spain, founded the bodega in 1989 and began excavating it in 1992, making the site part of the method rather than a backdrop to it. He remains both winemaker and owner, carrying the creative decisions and the responsibility for a small, quality-focused estate built around Premium Rioja wines. The work has a fixed address: Albelda de Iregua, a short drive from Logroño, in the Rioja DOCa. Rodríguez did not inherit a finished house and simply take up the station. He established the bodega, opened space under the ground, and made a cellar that could hold wine, history, and the slow pressure of ageing in one place. That sequence matters. First the intention, then the excavation, then the wines.

Traditional grapes, limited lots

The program stays close to Rioja’s older vocabulary: Tempranillo, Graciano, Garnacha, Viura, Malvasía, Garnacha Blanca, and Moscatel, with still reds, still whites, and dessert wines in the range. The estate works with organic and sustainable cultivation, avoids artificial herbicides and pesticides, and hand-selects parcels for its wines. Production is limited and quality-focused, not scaled for volume. In the cellar, Rodríguez’s emphasis falls on aged Rioja, with 200 Monges as the clearest signature of the house. The name reaches back to the monks associated with the Monastery of San Martín de Albelda and the Codex Vigilanus, giving the bottle a cultural charge without needing ornament. Other house names, including Cueva del Monge and Confesor, continue that monastic register while staying within the practical discipline of Rioja ageing. The bodega does not turn the reference into theatre; it lets the underground galleries, the codices, and the wines carry the connection.

The cellar is the room to understand here. Hand-excavated underground galleries hold the 200 Monges wines as they age, with art and medieval codices nearby, and the quietness of the place changes the pace of tasting. The setting is not a polished tasting bar detached from production. It is a small estate with a rural hotel, La Casa del Cofrade, a dining hall with a grill, and natural surroundings outside the village. The guided cave tours and English-language tastings sit around the work, not over it. In that light, the bodega reads as a house built for slow wine enjoyment: the cellar below, the table above, the landscape close enough to keep the wines from becoming abstract.

The bottle that holds the house

Rodríguez’s signature wines include 200 Monges, 200 Monges Gran Reserva 2001, 200 Monges Reserva Blanco, 200 Monges Gran Reserva Blanco, and 200 Monges Selección Especial Blanco. The range gives the estate its through-line: aged Rioja, limited production, traditional varieties, and a cellar made by the same maker who still works there.
