Reading the slope before the cellar

The vineyard gives Stephan von Neipperg, winemaker at Château Canon La Gaffelière in Saint-Émilion, his first decision each season. He works on the Right Bank as owner, with his family, of six châteaus in and around St.-Emilion, and oversees Saint-Émilion estates including this one. At Canon La Gaffelière, the discipline begins with limestone, clay, sand, weather, and time; those are working conditions, not ornament. The estate has been managed by the von Neipperg family since 1971, a span long enough for continuity to become a practical method rather than a position taken after the fact. His role here is not to impose one cellar signature across the family holdings. It is to keep each estate legible, parcel by parcel, while making the sequence of choices before the bottle as precise as the finished wine allows. Canon La Gaffelière remains the clearest reference point for that work, because site and patience carry more weight here than flourish.

Nineteen and a half hectares under organic work

The estate covers 19.5 hectares on south-facing slopes at the foot of the Saint-Émilion plateau, with clay, limestone, and sand shaping the vineyard’s register. The farming is organic, and the planted balance is unusually explicit for the appellation: 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. That proportion matters because the wine’s frame does not rest on Merlot alone; Cabernet Franc has a large share in the architecture, while Cabernet Sauvignon remains part of the estate’s old Right Bank vocabulary. Annual production is stated at 7,500-8,000 cases, a scale that keeps the work close to the vineyard rather than anonymous. The house is a Premier Grand Cru Classé estate, with organic fruit, a fixed place on the slope, and decisions made with enough restraint that the site remains visible.

Soil in glass, village in view

The tasting room sits in the former vat house, where tall glass vases hold soil from different terroir plots. It is a practical display, closer to a cellar note than a decorative one: the visitor sees the estate’s differences before tasting the wine drawn from them. The room stays quiet, with the old work of the vat house still present in the proportions, and the medieval village of Saint-Émilion visible from the estate’s position below the plateau. In that setting, hospitality does not need a separate performance. The cellar, the vineyard, and the tasting room all return to the same point, which is the reading of place through fruit, season, and patience.

A public mark beside longer work

Recognition reached the public record when Canon-La Gaffelière was named Wine Spectator Top 100, No. 2 Wine of 2013 for Canon-La Gaffelière (2013). The accolade belongs to this house, but it sits beside a longer measure: family stewardship across St.-Emilion, separate estate identities, and the conversion of soil and time into wines with immediate fruit and aging potential. For this address, the durable object is still Château Canon-La Gaffelière St.-Emilion 2015.
