Ownership on a slower clock

The vineyard decisions sit with Jacky Lorenzetti, winemaker at Château Lafon-Rochet in Saint-Estèphe, where ownership has meant the long patience of Médoc ground since 2021. His route to this estate did not begin at a pruning bench. Formal training at Hospitality School in Lausanne gave him the grammar of service and discipline, then Racing 92 in Paris gave him another kind of station, one built on timing, structure, and collective standards. At Lafon-Rochet, those habits move into viticulture: not as theatre, but as oversight, sequence, and decisions that only show their full shape after élevage and bottle age.

Lorenzetti also owns Château Lilian Ladouys and is owner in charge of viticulture at Château Pédesclaux in Pauillac, with the chairmanship of Ovalto sitting behind the wine work. That matters here because Lafon-Rochet is not a project that rewards haste. A classified growth in Saint-Estèphe asks for continuity before personality. The role is less about a signature imposed on the cellar than a set of conditions held steady: organic farming, medium-scale production, and the quiet pressure of a historic château whose reputation depends on the vineyard speaking with structure rather than polish.

Blue clay under Saint-Estèphe gravel

The estate works in the Saint-Estèphe appellation, on gravelly clay soils with a blue clay vein often compared to the ground at Pétrus. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc give the blending bench its range, though the house is centered on still red wine rather than breadth for its own sake. The soil is gravel for drainage and heat, clay for reserve and tension, with Saint-Estèphe’s natural firmness.

The stated philosophy is organic, which places more weight on the timing of vineyard work and less on correction later. Production sits at approximately 10,000 cases annually, a scale large enough to require system and small enough for decisions to remain legible from parcel to vat. In the renovated circular winery, concrete and stainless steel vats carry the cellar work. Those materials do not soften the appellation into another place. They give the team control over fermentation and extraction while allowing the estate’s harder edges, tannin, graphite, and dark fruit, to keep their line.

The circle of the cellar

The renovated winery gives Lafon-Rochet a particular rhythm: circular, modern in its working logic, set against the older presence of the château and its vineyard estate. The cellar is quiet, with the atmosphere of a property that has not mistaken renovation for reinvention. Concrete and stainless steel sit in the production space, while the tasting moves through the cave rather than a room built to distract from the wine.

Outside, the setting returns everything to Saint-Estèphe: gravelly clay underfoot, Cabernet-weighted blends in the cellar, and a historic house held in a classic register. The place reads as elegant because it does not overstate itself. Lorenzetti’s task is to keep that restraint intact, through organic viticulture and the estate discipline of Château Lafon-Rochet.
