Training at Bordeaux gave Jean-Claude Berrouet the base for a long cellar practice built on discipline and patience. From 1964 to 2007, he worked as winemaker and technical director at Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix in Bordeaux region, France, while also serving as chief winemaker and technical consultant at Dominus Estate in Napa Valley, California from 1982 to 2007. Across those roles, the through-line is consistency: wines aimed at elegance, structure, and an unforced register. Since 2007, Jean-Claude Berrouet has continued as technical consultant of wineries in Israel, Argentina, China, and France, while also serving as owner and operator of Vieux Château Saint André. The work remains active and international, but the focus is unchanged: apply accumulated cellar judgment without forcing the wine beyond its own terms.

Where They Are Now

As technical consultant of Wineries in Israel, Argentina, China, and France since 2007, Jean-Claude Berrouet keeps a hand in multiple cellar programs at once. At Vieux Château Saint André, where he is owner and operator, the work is direct and local: the same long view of craft, now carried through stewardship as much as through consultation.

Signature

Jean-Claude's signature wines include Château Pétrus, Dominus Estate, Château Trotanoy, and Château Latour à Pomerol. Those names map the range of his work: Pétrus and Trotanoy on the Right Bank, Dominus Estate in Napa Valley, and Château Latour à Pomerol as part of the same broader Bordeaux frame. The common thread is not spectacle, but control, continuity, and attention to proportion.

Honors

Jean-Claude Berrouet has received Institute of Masters of Wine, Winemakers' Winemaker Award (2018). That language is plain and exact. For Jean-Claude Berrouet, the measure of a wine is not force but balance, and the aim is to keep the work in a register of finesse and lightness rather than push it into excess.
