Stéphane Briday works from pruning to finished wine as Winemaker at Domaine Michel Briday in Rully, keeping the cellar tied to the vineyard rows outside. He has led the domaine since 1988, as winemaker and proprietor, after working here alongside his father in 1983–1984. That early apprenticeship was not a departure point. It was the estate itself, learned through vineyard work, cellar routine, and the repeated decisions that a small domaine asks of the same hands each season.

Stéphane Briday speaks about the work without making a performance of it. “I take a lot of pleasure in my work. I am 200% a winemaker.” The sentence has the shape of a cellar note rather than a motto: direct, practical, and rooted in the daily return to the same materials. At Domaine Michel Briday, the role reads as continuity. The family cadence remains visible in the way the work moves between soil, fruit, fermenting wine, and the bottle, with the proprietor still present in the discipline that joins those stages.

Sixteen hectares, three varieties

The domaine works on a small scale, with 16 hectares in the Côte Chalonnaise, and its language is Rully AOC: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Aligoté. The whites carry the estate’s reputation most clearly, built around minerality and freshness rather than weight. Rully Blanc, Rully Rouge AOC, and Rully Blanc “Les Cloux” 1er Cru AOC mark the range of Briday’s bench, from the broader village register to a named premier cru and back to red fruit from Pinot Noir.

The production philosophy is sustainable, and the domaine carries Terra Vitis certification, a formal sign of vineyard attention rather than a decorative credential. In the glass, the stated aim is balance, fruit, and mineral drive. Briday gives that aim a more tactile phrasing: “The goal is not to drink one glass but to want to drink another.” It is a useful measure for Rully, where freshness is not an accessory to the wine. It is part of the method.

The cave beside the vines

The place is intimate in scale, a family estate set among vineyards and cellars in Rully, with the quiet of a working domaine rather than the theatre of a large tasting room. The cave tasting belongs to that rhythm. Bottles move through a rustic, elegant register, with the cellar close enough to the vines that the conversation does not have to travel far from the climats that shaped them.

Here, the room is not separate from the work. It sits beside it. The same line runs from pruning to ripening to harvest, then into the cellar and out through the tasting glass. Briday’s next move is the next vintage, and the thread to follow remains Chardonnay from Rully AOC.
