Old vines before the cellar door

Raül Bobet reads Priorat through old vines as winemaker at Ferrer - Bobet in Falset, where the mountain cellar works from restraint rather than spread. Raül Bobet came to wine first through a family bodega, the physical memory of grapes underfoot before any public classroom enters the story. His later discipline passed through Torres, where he worked from 1986 to 2004, and through his continuing work as oenologist at Castell d’Encus in Talarn. At Ferrer Bobet, that line of apprenticeship is not presented as nostalgia. It becomes a way of holding intuition and method in the same hand.

The estate began in 2002 as a modern Priorat project with Bobet named as winemaker by the DOQ Priorat council. Its first pair, released in 2008, fixed the vocabulary early: Vinyes Velles 2005 and Seleccìo Especial Vinyes Velles 2005. The latter drew on grapes from the oldest vines in the Priorat, giving the debut a direct relationship to inherited plant material rather than a decorative old-vine claim. The estate occupies 70 hectares, with only 15 planted, a premium low-yield program held inside a larger landscape.

The estate occupies 70 hectares, with only 15 planted. That ratio tells much of the method: a premium program, with biodiversity left as part of the work rather than scenery around it. Ferrer Bobet’s identity sits with still red wines, above all Ferrer Bobet Vinyes Velles and Ferrer Bobet Selecció Especial Vinyes Velles, both named in the visitor program and both tied to the old-vine language of the house.

The cellar also keeps a sweet expression in view. Vi de Palla 20 Years is described by the winery as a sweet wine aged for 20 years in oak, a patient counterpoint to the structured red program. The house does not publish the vessel choices, yeast work, maceration regime or barrel percentages behind the reds, so the bench-side detail stays with what can be held: mountain viticulture, old vines, a compact portfolio, long oak aging for the Vi de Palla, and Bobet’s habit of joining rigour with intuition rather than choosing between them.

A mountain cellar built into quiet

The building sits integrated into the mountain, in a hidden corner of Priorat, with wide interior spaces and a controlled calm that suits the work. This is not a cellar dressed as a relic. The architecture is contemporary, spacious and low in volume, with the vineyard and the hills doing much of the talking through the glass and across the approach.

Inside, the experience follows the same order as the wines: vineyard, cellar, glass. The structured tastings include barrel contact and a walk among the vines, which matters here because the estate’s decisions are legible before the cork comes out. The room stays quiet enough for those decisions to register. Old vines, planted restraint and the long oak patience of Vi de Palla 20 Years remain the fixed points at Ferrer - Bobet.
