Reading the block before the cellar

Keith Hentschke reads the block first as winemaker at Hentley Farm in Seppeltsfield, then carries that judgement into the Barossa Valley cellar. His work here began with ownership, not consultancy: in 1997 he founded Hentley Farm, after training at Roseworthy College, and set the house around vineyard expression, quality, and longevity. By 1999, the bare block vineyard he started had begun to take on a clearer identity, and that origin still gives the estate its grammar. The role he holds now, Founder and Managing Director, keeps him close to the decisions that formed the place. Keith Hentschke has described the Barossa through its red grapes, saying, “we’ve got the most magnificent conditions for growing red grapes in particular, particularly Shiraz.” At Hentley Farm, that conviction sits beside a practical, sustainable method: read the site, respect its limits, and let patience do part of the work. The cellar does not need a loud signature when the vineyard already gives one.

A red wine program shaped by patience

The program at Hentley Farm is built around still red wine, with Shiraz, Grenache, and Cabernet Sauvignon at its center. The estate works at boutique scale, and the language around the wines stays close to single-estate farming rather than broad regional blending. Old Legend, one of Hentschke’s signature wines, sits near the house identity because it gives a name to the discipline behind the portfolio: Barossa fruit, handled with enough restraint to keep place in view. Those recognitions matter here because they attach to Hentley Farm itself, not to a borrowed reputation from another address. The technical base from Roseworthy College shows less as theory than as consistency, a preference for planning, and the long view required when a bare block has to become a vineyard with a voice.

The cottage, the vineyard, the view

The tasting room sits in an 1840s heritage cottage in Seppeltsfield, with gardens, fireside seating, and vineyard views toward rolling hills and Greenock Creek. It is an intimate room, quiet enough for the glass to hold attention, and rustic enough that the building still feels tied to agricultural work rather than display. Curated tastings and wine pairings place the cellar’s red wine focus beside a kitchen rhythm, but the room keeps its pace. The counter, the table, and the view all point back to the same source: vines close enough to remind the drinker that this is not an abstract Barossa label. The estate’s charm is not separate from its method. It is the setting in which that method becomes legible.

What the next glass keeps in view

Hentschke remains in post, and the estate still carries the imprint of the early block he put into work. That continuity is the point to hold onto here: a founder’s hand, a sustainable vineyard culture, and a cellar still organized around red grapes. End the glass where the house asks you to end it, with Old Legend and the bare block vineyard in mind.
