At Heumann, which he owns and runs with Evelyne Heumann, those habits sit inside a family-owned winery in the Villány-Siklós landscape, where the work is measured less by spectacle than by repetition. The property is small, producing 30,000-50,000 bottles annually, and that scale matters. It keeps decisions close to the hands that make them. Villány gives the house its frame, particularly through Cabernet Franc, but Heumann’s range also includes Kékfrankos, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay, Rhine Riesling, Gewürztraminer, still rosé, still white, and still red wines. The state of the art cellar sits within the husband-and-wife house of Heumann and Evelyne Heumann in Villány. Heumann has held this role since 1995, long enough for consistency to become part of the method.

Cabernet Franc with a Villány accent

The program turns on Villány’s red-wine identity and on a portfolio that gives each cuvée a distinct name rather than folding everything into a single house style. Blue Secret 2018, Heumann La Trinità 2019, Villány Franc, Kékfrankos Reserve, and Lagona Villány are among the wines associated with Heumann. The names do practical work: they tell the trade where to look inside the range, from a regional Franc to a reserve expression of Kékfrankos. Cabernet Franc is the stated point of emphasis, not as an international calling card detached from place, but as Villány’s most legible red variety in this cellar. Around it, Bordeaux varieties, Kékfrankos, Syrah, and aromatic whites widen the bench. The discipline is in keeping that range coherent at small scale.

Outside, Villány-Siklós supplies the scenic register: rows, slopes, and the rustic edge of a Hungarian wine region known for red wines. Inside, the backbeat is quieter.
