Shiraz kept close to the hand

Shiraz stays at the centre of the cellar for Niels Verburg, winemaker at Luddite Wines in Bot River, where the work begins with fruit rather than apparatus. He came through Beaumont in 1996, a South African cellar chapter shaped by direct, hands-on work, then founded his own project on the Houw Hoek mountain slopes in 1999. At Luddite, he remains owner and winemaker, holding a line that prefers judgment over display and a cellar vocabulary stripped back to essentials. His own rule is plain: “The nitty gritty of good winemaking is to have good grapes, good yeast and good barrels.” That sentence gives the order of the work, from farming to fermentation to élevage, and it also explains the house name without needing to make it decorative. Luddite is not anti-craft or anti-progress; it resists technology when technology becomes theatre. The flagship Luddite Shiraz carries that position most directly. It is treated with minimal intervention, with firmness and restraint, and with the maker’s character left visible in the glass rather than polished away.

A lo-fi cellar on Houw Hoek slopes

The program is small, organic in philosophy, and dry-farmed in its sourcing tags, with Shiraz leading a set of varieties that includes Chenin Blanc, Viognier, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvedre and Sauvignon Blanc. The wines stay in the still red and still white register, with power and edge rather than softness as the easy answer. Luddite Shiraz anchors the house; Luddite Chenin Blanc and the Saboteur bottlings widen the frame without moving the work away from the same discipline. The known signatures reach from Luddite Shiraz to Luddite Saboteur White Blend 2023, Saboteur Red Blend Luddite 2021, and Luddite Chenin Blanc Niels Verburg 2023. An earlier marker, Luddite Shiraz 2001/2 Western Cape, remains useful because it shows the project near its beginning, before estate fruit became central to the story. The technical details that are public are deliberately spare. What can be said with confidence is that Verburg’s method gives priority to the condition of the grapes, the yeast, the barrel, and the patience not to crowd the wine with unnecessary intervention.

The farm, the fynbos, the quiet

The place sits as a small family farm at the base of the Houw Hoek Mountains, with rolling hills, fynbos and cool ocean air in the frame. The room is not dressed as a stage set. It reads as unpretentious and slightly off-centre, a farm setting with panoramic views and enough quiet for the cellar’s pace to remain audible. Private tastings belong to that scale, intimate rather than crowded, with the landscape doing part of the work before a glass is lifted. In Bot River, that matters: the wine is not separated from the slope, the weather, or the maker’s appetite for doing the long way with fewer moving parts. If the close of the glass has a subject here, it is still Luddite Shiraz.
