Since 1999, he has been owner and winemaker of Luddite Wines, where that same approach has continued with a steady focus.

The Work Today

Since 1999, Verburg has been owner and winemaker at the Bot River estate he founded. Shiraz remains the core of the work, and the method is spelled out plainly in his own rule: "The nitty gritty of good winemaking is to have good grapes, good yeast and good barrels." The sentence names the essentials of the trade—farming, fermentation, and élevage—and leaves little room for distraction. Verburg’s flagship, Luddite Shiraz, is described as being made with minimal intervention and as Niels Verburg contained in a glass, a phrase that ties the wine directly to the maker and frames the bottle as an expression of his approach rather than of excess technique. The name fits the position as well: a resistance to technology used as a symbol of progress. In Verburg’s cellar, advancement comes through judgment, patience, and the discipline to let the fundamentals speak first.

The wine most closely tied to Verburg’s reputation is Luddite Shiraz, the flagship bottling from Bot River. Its identity rests on Shiraz, minimal intervention, and a style that lets the winemaker’s character show without being overworked. The result is focused rather than showy, and it reflects the same practical conviction that runs through his broader work. The earlier 2003 release, Luddite Shiraz 2001/2 Western Cape, remains a useful marker because it shows the project near its start, before estate fruit became the center of the story. Bought-in grapes, a clear varietal focus, and a producer still defining his own lane: that is the origin visible in bottle.
