Fruit comes first for Mari Wells Coyle, who held the Executive Winemaker post at ONEHOPE Wine in Rutherford, where the work begins with Cabernet and the judgment of what the vineyard can carry into the bottle. She trained at University of California, Davis, then built her bench through winemaking posts at a small woman-owned winery, David Girard Vineyards and Sterling Vineyards, and has been winemaker at Sebastiani Vineyards & Winery since 2023. Her practice is centred on Cabernet and Bordeaux wines, with a technical focus she states plainly: "to bring the best fruit to the bottle. Every decision I make is a part of bringing the vineyards to the table in a meaningful way."

That sentence gives the place its discipline. ONEHOPE works from a 10-acre estate in the Rutherford AVA, with vines, a state-of-the-art winery, hospitality spaces, and a private farmhouse held together by a sustainable production philosophy. The scale is small, which matters in a cellar built around decisions that cannot be hidden by volume. The register is consistent across her work: Cabernet, Bordeaux structure, fruit handled as the central material rather than as ornament.

The program at ONEHOPE is still wine, red and white, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Petite Sirah named among the varieties. The estate’s appellation is Rutherford AVA, a word that carries weight in Cabernet country without needing decoration. What can be said with confidence is the frame: sustainable sourcing, small-scale production, and a winery designed for estate work rather than spectacle.

The house ties every bottle to a charitable mission, including causes such as education and healthcare. On the bench, that mission does not replace the work of farming, sorting, fermenting, aging, blending, and choosing. It sits beside it. A bottle still has to hold its line in the glass. Her language about bringing vineyards to the table keeps the emphasis where it belongs, on the passage from fruit to finished wine and on the decisions that either clarify or blur that passage.

The Oak Room and the quiet estate

The Oak Room is surrounded by oak barrels, a hospitality space arranged close enough to the cellar language that the tasting does not feel separated from the making. The atmosphere is quiet, comfortable, and elegant, with private personalized tastings and small bites set within an intimate estate rather than a crowded room. The counterpoint is useful: polished service on one side, barrels and vineyard work on the other.

Outside, the estate keeps the scale legible. Vines, winery, farmhouse, and tasting room sit within the same Rutherford property, so the visitor reads the place as a working wine estate, not only as a room for pouring. The material cues are direct: oak, glass, Cabernet, the stillness of a cellar where the next decision may be as small as a blend adjustment. For ONEHOPE, the durable noun is still the Oak Room.
