Realm Cellars Today: Three Estates Across Napa Valley

Realm Cellars began in 2002, but the modern winery is best understood through the estate portfolio assembled after Scott Becker helped lead its revival in 2012. Realm now farms three distinct Napa Valley properties: Moonracer in Stags Leap District, Farella in Coombsville and Houyi high on Pritchard Hill, and in 2026 Realm became proud owners of Farella Estate. Tastings at Houyi Estate are $125 for four current-release wines. That range lets the team work across markedly different elevations, exposures and soil profiles while keeping a recognizable emphasis on concentration, freshness and site.

The portfolio combines estate wines with carefully selected grower fruit. The Bard is Realm's flagship Napa Valley proprietary red and its largest-production bottling. The single-vineyard wines, including Houyi, Moonracer and wines from acclaimed Beckstoffer sites, push the comparison toward individual places. Fidelio, named for Beethoven's only opera, is Realm's sole white wine and gives the tasting a vivid counterpoint to the Cabernet-led range.

Houyi Estate on Pritchard Hill

Realm acquired Houyi in 2022, adding a dramatic Pritchard Hill estate to the winery's holdings. The approach climbs above Lake Hennessey to a high, exposed plateau with broad views across Napa Valley. The experience is intentionally quiet and architectural: sculpture, dark materials, native landscaping and the vineyard frame the arrival before the tasting begins.

Inside the cellar, concrete eggs, clay vessels and a wooden ovum sit alongside traditional barrels. These are working tools rather than decoration. The team uses them to follow individual lots, manage texture and oxygen exchange, and preserve freshness in wines that can otherwise become purely opulent. Tasting Houyi at the estate makes the wine's mountain identity unusually easy to read because the vineyard remains visible throughout the visit.

Moonracer, Farella and the Realm Winemaking Team

Moonracer, acquired in 2015, is Realm's Stags Leap District home and the setting for its deepest member experience. Farella in Coombsville supplies a cooler-climate estate perspective. Together with Houyi, the three properties give Realm a true estate foundation while The Bard continues to express the broader Napa Valley through blending.

Realm's current winegrowing leadership is collaborative. Chris Cooney serves as Chief of Winegrowing, Kelly Fields is Winemaker and Benoit Touquette is Consulting Winemaker. Touquette remains central to the style and history of the modern winery, but describing him as Realm's sole winemaker is no longer accurate. The current structure joins vineyard work, resident cellar leadership and long-term consulting experience in one team.

What a Realm Visit Is Actually Like

Realm is not a walk-in tasting room. Access is appointment-based, limited and tied to the winery's list and member relationships. Houyi is the more accessible introduction for eligible list members and centers the Pritchard Hill estate. Moonracer is a deeper experience for established members with qualifying purchase history; its annual format can change and may include special comparative tastings or collaborations.

Eligibility, availability, guest limits and fees can change, so visitors should confirm the current experience directly with Realm before planning a Napa itinerary. The useful distinction is simple: Houyi introduces the estate story from Pritchard Hill, while Moonracer is designed as the more private, evolving experience for Realm's most engaged members.

Why Realm Matters

Realm's appeal is the combination of comeback story, estate ambition and genuine cellar experimentation. It can make a broad Napa Valley blend like The Bard, a site-specific mountain Cabernet such as Houyi and an energetic white wine like Fidelio without making the portfolio feel scattered. For collectors, the wines reward comparison across sites and vintages. For visitors, the estate experiences make the same argument physically: Napa is not one place, and Realm's three properties are intentionally different expressions of it.
