Continuity in the mountain cellar

Pinot Noir sets the pace for Jeff Brinkman, Director of Winemaking at Rhys Vineyards in Los Gatos, before any blend or release takes shape. He began at Rhys in 2006 as winemaker, then moved into the director’s chair without leaving the estate’s working life. That matters here because the place asks for memory: the same steep mountain ground, the same cellar decisions returning with each harvest, the same need to read small differences before they harden into the finished wine. Brinkman’s role is not framed as movement through houses or borrowed acclaim. It is station work, widened over time. At Rhys, the authority sits in duration, in knowing when Pinot Noir needs restraint, when Chardonnay can hold its line, and how the estate’s range should remain coherent without flattening the character of each site.

Single vineyard work at elevation

The vineyard rises to 2,360 feet in the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA, with steep canyons and distant ridges shaping the daily conditions around the vines. Rhys farms organically and works at small scale, concentrating on single-vineyard Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays, with Nebbiolo, Nerello Mascalese, and Carricante now part of the estate’s Italian-varietal line from Centennial Mountain. The house’s language is still wine first, red and white, with sparkling also in the program. What the estate publishes is enough to show the discipline: mountain fruit, organic farming, underground cave production, and a cellar built around separation rather than anonymity. Pinot Noir remains the grape most closely tied to Brinkman’s hands here. It gives little cover to broad handling, so the work depends on timing, proportion, and the kind of repetition that makes judgment quieter rather than simpler.

The cave, the ridges, the seated glass

The production work happens underground, in caves cut into the mountain setting, while the tasting room sits inside a home above the canyons. The room is quiet, seated, and intimate, with the glass placed against a long view rather than a crowded counter. Panoramic ridges do not make the wine, but they return the drinker to the conditions that do: slope, exposure, elevation, and the distance between one parcel and another. Rhys does not need a loud room for that argument. The cellar and the house speak in the same register, controlled, spare, and built for attention. A single-vineyard tasting here is less about performance than sequence; the wines move across the table with the canyons still in sight.

What stays in the glass

Rhys carries a current award, and Brinkman continues to guide the winemaking direction. His progression at the estate gives the cellar a retained memory, which is useful in a program that asks Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and mountain-grown Italian varieties to share a common discipline without tasting like the same idea repeated. If the close of a visit leaves one fixed image, it is the seated glass held against Centennial Mountain and the Santa Cruz Mountains ridges.
