Hands first in Ballard Canyon

The farming comes before the label. Keith Saarloos, winemaker at Saarloos & Sons in Santa Ynez, keeps the work close to the 17-acre south-facing estate in Ballard Canyon, where Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cabernet Sauvignon give the cellar its shape. He built the house from a farming impulse rather than a winery ambition, and that order still matters here: ground first, bottle later, family threaded through the names on the glass. Saarloos is founder, winemaker and farmer of Windmill Ranch Vineyard, so the role does not divide neatly between field and cellar. It reads as one station, carried by the same hands. His public voice stays in the same register on the weekly radio show and podcast "Chopping It Up with Keith Saarloos" on Krazy Country 105.9, plainspoken rather than polished smooth. The creed he gives the house is direct: “We live to honor those that have come before us, and to prepare the way for those to come.” At this scale, that is not decoration. It is the method by which the vineyard, the family and the release calendar are held together.

Small lots under family names

The cellar works from ultra-small production, with all wines under 400 cases total and some bottlings as rare as 40 cases. That scale changes the discipline. Decisions stay near the fruit, near the family table, near the person whose name may end up on the bottle. The stated philosophy is sustainable, and the wines stay within a focused band: still reds, rosé and fortified wine drawn from the Ballard Canyon and Santa Ynez Valley frame. The varietal language is Rhône-led, with Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, then Cabernet Sauvignon adding another line to the house. Cash's Crush Rosé 2024 Glow-in-the-Dark Edition carries the family naming into a release with play in its surface and farming underneath it. Saarloos does not present the work as a technical exhibition. He keeps agriculture in front, lets the vineyard do the first speaking, then uses the cellar to carry that fruit into wines that remain tied to people rather than to a house style written in abstraction.

The living room and the windmill

The tasting room sits in Los Olivos village with the temperament of a living room, conversational in noise and informal in posture, with a rock-and-roll current running through the family frame. It is not built around distance. The room is warm, rustic, intimate and shaped more by welcome than by ceremony, while the estate holds the working view: vineyard rows, a windmill and the south-facing hill that gives the place its physical argument. Saturday vineyard tours led by the owner keep the guest close to the agricultural side of the house, not as spectacle, but as context. The counter belongs to the same story as the field.
