Cabernet decisions on rocky slopes

Cabernet sets the pace for Jim Duane, winemaker at Seavey Vineyard in St. Helena, where steep, rocky slopes make timing a cellar decision before it becomes a glass. He has led winemaking at the estate since 2011, working inside a Napa Valley property whose history is held in stone as much as in vine. The winery occupies a historic 1881 stone dairy barn on a 200-acre estate in Conn Valley, near Lake Hennessey, with vineyards dating back to the 1870s. Duane’s training at University of California, Davis gave him the technical frame for that work, but his own account of Napa keeps the human part in view. “I came to the Napa Valley because I thought the grapes would guarantee the ability to make world class wines. While the grapes did their part, it was my mentors and the community that ultimately bestowed that ability.” At Seavey, that sentence lands cleanly: site first, then judgment, then the discipline learned from people who have already spent time on the tools.

A program built around Cabernet

The estate works on a small scale, with a sustainable philosophy and a focus on still red wines. Cabernet Sauvignon is the anchor, supported by Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Chardonnay, and Duane’s own signature wines include 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2018 Caravina Cabernet, and 2020 Chardonnay. The house’s standout feature is not a polished abstraction of Napa, but a set of physical constraints: south- and west-facing vineyard slopes, rugged terraces, and fruit grown on steep ground. Those details matter because they push the method toward patience and selection rather than speed. Duane’s role asks for the same double attention that shapes his wider work: he makes wine, and since 2014 he has also hosted Inside Winemaking, speaking in the working vocabulary of the cellar. The estate does not publish its cellar protocols in the material at hand, so the clearest reading stays with what the place does state: Cabernet led from a historic Conn Valley property, made under Duane’s hand for age, balance, and drinkers.

The barn, the cellar, the slope

The room around the work is quiet. The renovated stone winery carries the weight of the old dairy barn without turning it into theater; it sits among sheltered rolling hills, with steep vineyards rising close by and Lake Hennessey near enough to place the estate in its fold of Conn Valley. The mood is relaxed and welcoming, but the property itself keeps a firmer register. Stone, terraces, and slope do not soften for hospitality. They remind the cellar what kind of fruit is coming in. In that setting, Duane’s plain line about wine stays useful: “People love drinking wine, and that knowledge needs to always sit on my shoulder as both inspiration and as a guide for the work that takes place in the winery.” The close attention here returns, again and again, to Cabernet Sauvignon from Seavey’s rocky slopes.
