A bottle of Único asks for patience before it asks for speech. Marta Álvarez Mezquíriz, President and Chair of Tempos Vega Sicilia, leads Vega Sicilia in Valbuena de Duero with that tempo in view. Her station is not the fermenter or the pruning row; it is the family table, the allocation meeting, the decision to keep a house built on time from becoming hurried by demand. The Álvarez family purchased Vega Sicilia in 1982, and Marta now oversees the group that holds Vega Sicilia in Ribera del Duero alongside Alión, Pintia, Oremus and Macán. Before returning to this work from Valladolid, she worked in the Wines and Spirits division of LVMH, including roles with Krug Champagnes, Château Galoupet and Moët Hennessy in the United Kingdom. At Valbuena de Duero, that outside training meets an older estate discipline: Tempranillo held beside Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec, clay-limestone ground, quiet cellars, and a scale large enough to matter without letting volume set the method.

Tempranillo with Bordeaux memory

The craft at Vega Sicilia begins with Ribera del Duero fruit and a house language shaped by Bordeaux-inspired blending. The estate works with Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec, a set of varieties that gives its still red wines both local weight and a broader structural grammar. The property is described at roughly 210 hectares, with low yields and production that sits around 80,000-200,000 bottles per cuvée. Those figures matter because they frame the discipline: enough wine to require a serious cellar program, not enough to hide weak decisions in mass. Único and Valbuena carry the public memory of the place, but the quieter fact is the patience behind them. Founded in 1864, Vega Sicilia has had to protect continuity through ownership, fashion and appellation change. Under Marta Álvarez Mezquíriz, the work of the chair is partly restraint, keeping the long-aging identity of the estate intact while the wider Tempos Vega Sicilia group moves across regions and houses.

Clay-limestone under a quiet cellar

The place sits in Valbuena de Duero, in high-altitude Ribera del Duero, where the vineyard ground is given as clay-limestone and the estate atmosphere is quiet, historic and controlled. In a winery like this, the room is not meant to perform for the visitor. The cellar does the carrying. Barrels, bottle age, private tastings and the slow release of cuvées create a tempo closer to a library than a tasting counter. The setting has a rural edge, but the house reads with polish: classic rather than theatrical, elegant without needing noise.
