From cellar assistant to the same old vines

In 2003, Almudena Alberca entered Viñas del Cenit as Ayudante de enología; today she is winemaker at Bodega Viñas del Cenit in Villanueva De Campean, Spain. By 2008, Alberca had moved into the enóloga role here, before later posts in Ribera del Duero and Valladolid widened her technical remit. Her Master of Wine credential, earned in 2018, sits beside that cellar history rather than above it. At Viñas del Cenit, Zamora came first, with the bench-side work of a small estate before the judging panels and wider technical direction arrived.

Tempranillo from gravel and sand

The craft here begins outside the door, in the Tierra del Vino de Zamora DOP, where the winery works old bush-trained Tempranillo on gravel and sand soils near the Duero corridor. Public accounts differ on the vineyard footprint, giving both 20 hectares of century-old vines and 44 hectares of estate vineyards, but they agree on the point that matters for the glass: old plant material, small parcels, and a red-wine program built around Tempranillo. The estate also sits in a landscape where older white varieties remain part of the vineyard memory, including Doña Blanca, Verdejo, Godello, and Albillo. In the cellar, the most precise stated method belongs to Via Cenit: 14 months in French oak, with 60% new barrels. That is a clear choice, not a decorative one. It asks the fruit to carry tannin, spice, and time without losing the dark Zamora line that gives the wine its frame.

A cellar in the cratered country

The room is rural and quiet, a restored farmhouse-style cellar on the edge of Villanueva de Campeán, with old-vine plots around it and a cratered, lunar cast to the ground beyond. This is not a hospitality house built to distract from production. The experience is close to the cellar and the vineyard, with guided visits, tastings, and sales kept intimate enough that the work remains the subject. The setting does part of the explaining: dry-farmed vines, open Castilian light, gravel and sand underfoot, and a regional identity that sits next to Toro without borrowing its voice. When the tasting turns to Cenit, Via Cenit, Venta Mazarrón, or Villano, the room gives the wines their proper scale.

The Zamora line held in bottle

Viñas del Cenit matters because it gives a serious modern address to a quieter wine country, one where rural depopulation left old vines standing as survivors rather than fashion pieces. The estate’s best work is not a claim of novelty. It is a continuation of the local material, carried through Tempranillo and the older mixed vineyard tradition into named bottles. Cenit 2009 remains the label most closely tied to Alberca’s signature here, alongside Via Cenit Colección Blanco.
