Gravity before force

Gravity sets the first rule in Rainer Christ’s cellar: no pumping. As winemaker at Weingut Rainer Christ in Vienna, he keeps that decision close to the identity of the house, a city winery with a family name on the label and its work tied to the vineyards above Jedlersdorf in Floridsdorf. Christ became head of Weingut Christ in 2004, and his authority now sits at two scales: the cellar that carries his name, and WienWein, the shared Vienna frame whose founding in 2006 he has described as a locomotive for the city’s wine culture.

The lineage published around Christ is spare, but the discipline is plain. He speaks of cellar work as a matter of restraint, not theatre: “In the cellar, gravity is key. A CHRIST does not pump wine.” That sentence gives the bench-side view of the method. Fruit comes in with the weight of place already on it; the cellar does not answer with force. For a winery working inside a capital city, the standard is local and accountable, with each decision returning to Vienna rather than borrowing a larger regional posture.

Field blends from Bisamberg

The house’s signature ground is Wiener Gemischter Satz DAC, handled here as an organic, hand-harvested field blend from historic Bisamberg vineyards. The vineyards face south, and the range works through the grapes Vienna has long known how to hold together: Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Zweigelt, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The scale is medium, with production stated at 100,000 bottles a year, large enough to make the house visible in the city, small enough for cellar choices to remain legible.

Christ’s own words about Bisamberg keep site and style in the same line: “This Viennese specialty from Bisamberg combines cool fruitiness, elegance, and freshness in an ideal way.” The named bottles carry that register forward, from Wiener Gemischter Satz DAC trocken Bio to 2025 Chardonnay trocken Bio and 2025 Riesling Bisamberg trocken Bio. One fixed dated marker remains the 2008 WIENER Chardonnay Grand Select, where grape, vintage and Viennese origin meet in a single label.

The cellar beside the guest garden

The work happens with the city close by, but the setting is not urban in the usual sense. South-facing Bisamberg vines lead back toward a cellar, a Heuriger tavern and a guest garden, the old Vienna arrangement in which production and hospitality do not sit far apart. The tasting room can move between cave tasting and private tasting, but the better description is spatial: cellar below, vines above, glasses poured near the place that made them.

The room is quiet rather than theatrical. The backbeat is the gravity-fed cellar, the organic vineyard work, and a winemaker whose public language keeps returning to Vienna as a shared discipline. If the next release stays close to that line, it will be measured first against Bisamberg and the 2025 Riesling Bisamberg trocken Bio.
