i. Biography
At Celler de Capçanes, Spain, the work starts with site selection and interpretation: old-vine Garnacha, diverse vineyard plots, and red wines built around place as much as fruit. In DO Montsant, where soil and exposure shape the frame of a wine, Anna Rovira’s role as Technical Director sits between vineyard material and cellar decision. The craft is to keep those differences legible in bottle through precision, patience, and quality control.
The Path
Formal wine training at Université de Bourgogne gave Anna Rovira the technical base for work that is described through precision and close reading of origin. The useful discipline here is not technique for its own sake, but technique used to clarify what the vineyard material can carry. Chief winemaking and technical direction at Celler de Capçanes require decisions across vineyard interpretation and cellar handling. In Anna Rovira’s work, the emphasis remains on stewardship: aligning fruit, structure, freshness, and expression so the finished wine holds together without losing its site signal.
The Work Today
Technical direction at Celler de Capçanes is tied to the estate’s pursuit of excellence in each bottle, with Garnacha as a central marker. Older vines and varied sites give the work its range; Anna Rovira’s task is to read what each parcel offers and preserve the distinctions that make those parcels useful to the final wine. Cabrida is one of the estate’s defining bottlings and a benchmark for the DO Montsant, created to express old-vine Garnacha from the Serra de Llaberia. Its craft premise is restraint around mature-vine material: allowing depth, concentration, and origin to register without overworking the statement. Cabrida 2022 was presented in the 2024 Selection-Wine Competition Germany, where it received 95 points, Top Level Gold, 5 stars, and an Outstanding rating; in that same setting, Anna Rovira was selected as Oenologist of the Year 2024 in red wines. La Nit de les Garnatxes is a Capçanes study in soil. The series shows four different soils while the grape, vintage, region, viticulture practices, and vinification remain the same, turning the wines into a controlled comparison of how ground can mark Garnacha. The method is direct: keep the variables fixed and let the soil differences carry the lesson. Made in 1995 at the request of the Barcelona Jewish Community, it became an immediate commercial and critical success, adding a distinctive chapter to the estate’s identity.
