The Climb

Technical training at Adelaide University and the 2001–2013 stretch as business partner and winemaker at Mitolo Wines in McLaren Vale gave Ben Glaetzer a working base in structure, site, and scale. That span set the terms for the rest of the output: wines built with depth rather than shorthand, and with the kind of layering that comes from repeated attention to texture, line, and finish. Since 2002, the Glaetzer label has carried that same focus in Barossa Valley, with Shiraz as a consistent point of reference.

Today

In Ben Glaetzer’s hands, that register is not flattened into sweetness or weight; it is kept in check by shape and poise. The work lands with force, but it does so through detail, not blunt volume.

Signature

Amon-Ra Shiraz, G.A.M. Shiraz, and Angela Shiraz show the house style with the least noise: concentration held inside restraint, and richness kept from tipping into excess. In each of these wines, Ben Glaetzer works toward texture and dimension, so the wine opens in stages rather than arriving all at once.

Recognition

New World Winemaker of the Year in 2006 placed Ben Glaetzer’s work in clear view, with Adelaide University, Mitolo Wines, and Shiraz already defining the frame. The recognition sits naturally beside the wines themselves: practical, exacting, and built to hold attention beyond the first sip. It marks a point where the method was already visible in the glass.
