i. Biography
Ben Mullen is owner and winemaker at Mulline Vintners in Geelong, working from a clear interest in place, precision and the distinct character of region. The point of the wines is not broad statement but local difference, made legible through careful handling.
Coming Up
Training at Adelaide University gave Ben Mullen a formal base, but the early practice came in the cellar door and the cellar. He worked first as a cellar door worker in Barossa, then as a winemaker at Torbreck, setting up the practical habits that would carry through the rest of his career. Movement through different regions has shaped the work. In 2013–2013, Ben Mullen worked as a vintage worker at Domaine Dujac in Burgundy, then from 2014 became winemaker at Yarra Yering in Yarra Valley. That sequence added another layer to an already broadening view of grape, site and style. Responsibility widened again from 2015, when Ben Mullen became assistant winemaker at Craggy Range in New Zealand, before later becoming winemaker at Craggy Range in Hawkes Bay. In 2017–2018, he served as chief winemaker at Clyde Park, and since 2018 he has been owner/winemaker of Mulline Vintners. The progression runs from cellar door to senior winemaking and ownership, with each role carrying more of the final decision-making.
Where They Are Now
At Mulline Vintners in Geelong, Ben Mullen is working to draw out flavour and regional nuance with clarity. Geelong is not treated as a single flat identity here; it is the subject, and the winery is the instrument used to separate, define and articulate what the region can show.
Signature
Ben Mullen's signature wines include Bannockburn Syrah 2022 and Fume Blanc. They sit within the house language of Mulline Vintners and show the style the winery is putting forward.
In Their Words “I want to showcase the vast difference between the subregions of Geelong, as I felt there wasn’t enough acknowledged definition between the Geelong, the Moorabool Valley and Bellarine Peninsula.” That line gets to the core of the work: regional definition at a finer scale. Ben Mullen is not speaking about Geelong as a single block, but about the differences within it, and about making those differences clear in the glass. The business side is moving too. For Ben Mullen, Mulline Vintners is growing while staying tied to the regional distinctions that shape its focus.
