    Portrait of Claire Moueix

    i. Biography

In 2013, Claire Moueix took over the Pomerol property from her father, Bernard, and set a clear working standard for Château Taillefer: wines made as close as possible to their terroir. That is less a line of positioning than a method, carried from the vineyard rows into the cellar, where each choice is judged against what the land gives.

The Essentials The language around the vineyard and cellar stays plain because the work asks for close observation. Since Claire Moueix took over the management of Château Taillefer in 2013, the brief has stayed consistent: reveal the terroir and make the wine with simplicity and meticulousness. The restraint in that phrasing matches the restraint in the work itself, where the aim is not to add noise, but to keep decisions tight and useful. What follows from that is a preference for letting the wine “be.” That is a practical stance as much as a philosophical one: guide rather than push, keep control without crowding out the site, and leave room for the character of the place to show through. In the vineyard and in the cellar, the approach draws on modern technology and traditional methods without making a spectacle of either.

In Their Words “Since we took over the management of Château Taillefer in 2013, we have been committed to revealing its terroir and making its wine with simplicity and meticulousness.” The line is direct because the work is direct: origin first, detail second, with precision kept in service of the wine rather than the other way around. It reads like a working note, and it frames the estate in terms of discipline rather than display. “In the vineyard and in the cellar, we draw inspiration from both modern technology and traditional methods.” The balance here is the point. Modern tools and inherited methods sit together as means of clarifying, not overriding, what Château Taillefer already holds. The intent is to refine conditions so the wine’s identity can come forward clearly.
