The Climb

At The Balvenie, continuity has been part of the work, and 1974–2023 run as malt master (or similar start year around 1962, if a range is kept) shows what that looks like in practice: long attention to the same distillery, the same standards, and the same decisions repeated until they become craft. Over nearly five decades in Dufftown, his name became tied to the house itself, not by branding, but by repetition, judgement, and the discipline of staying with a place long enough to know it well.

Today

Since 2023, David Stewart has held the title of Honorary Ambassador at The Balvenie in Dufftown. The change preserves the connection between the distillery and the man most closely associated with its whisky, while shifting the work from daily making to representation. It is still a craft role in the trade sense: knowledge kept in circulation, standards carried forward, and the memory of how the house was built remaining part of its present.
