The Work Today
Fraser McKinley trained at Auckland before moving into cellar work as a winemaking apprentice at Torbreck and the Standish Wine Co. That sequence matters in wine: formal study, then repetition, then the slow shift from observing process to making decisions that hold shape in bottle. The apprenticeship years are where technique is tested against routine, and where a maker learns the discipline of paying attention to every stage that affects a wine’s life. Today, Fraser McKinley is winemaker and proprietor of Sami-Odi, a role that joins production and ownership in one set of hands. In practice, that means judgment is required at every point, with decisions made not only for the current vintage but for the line of wines a producer is building over time. The work is as much about consistency of method as it is about point of view.
Signature
Hoffmann Vineyard shiraz/syrah and Hoffmann Dallwitz Syrah are Fraser McKinley’s signature wines. In trade terms, those names matter because they tie a maker to vineyard and cuvée with enough repetition to become part of the house style. They show where his work is anchored and how his identity as a producer is expressed through named sites rather than through volume or breadth.
In Their Words “I’m always massively taken aback when I see our wine in context with wines like those.” The line shows a producer still alert to comparison, and to the pressure that comes with being placed beside other wines of note. It reads as recognition of context: wine is judged in relation to other wine, and that setting can sharpen both confidence and restraint. Fraser McKinley’s remark sits in that space between surprise and discipline.
Acclaim
Fraser McKinley’s honors include Young Gun of Wine (2014). The award marks an early public reading of the work, after training at Auckland and apprenticeship time at Torbreck and the Standish Wine Co, and before or alongside the responsibilities of Sami-Odi. In a field where recognition often follows years of repetition, this one signaled that the work was already being tracked beyond the cellar.
