Geneviève Janssens

Wine science enters early through the University of Bordeaux (1974), and that training gives structure to the work that follows. Geneviève Janssens worked as enologist at own laboratory and consulting business before joining Robert Mondavi Winery in Napa Valley (from 1978) as enologist. That path moved her from analysis and consultation into the broader demands of production, where the scope of responsibility widens with each stage.

She later served as director of production at Opus One (1989–1997), adding another large production role to a career built on range as much as rigor. Her own words point to a preference for work that extends beyond the lab bench: “I feel that the reason why I decided to leave France and the wine world in France at that time it's because I will have been in white coat in a lab and not in the field or at the winery or having some responsibilities. The line makes the shift clear. Read together, the remarks frame a career shaped by the desire for broader stewardship over the wine itself.

Today, Janssens is Winemaker Emerita at Robert Mondavi Winery in Oakville, a title that signals continuity with the winery’s ongoing work. She is also a consultant with GJ Wine Consulting, carrying experience beyond a single estate and into advisory work. In 1998 she became Winemaker & Owner of Portfolio Limited Edition, adding ownership to an already substantial production background. The signature work most closely tied to her Oakville tenure is the To Kalon Project at Robert Mondavi Winery.

The project sits inside the winery’s identity, and Janssens’s connection to it places site at the center of the craft. Across her roles, the constant is a disciplined attention to how fruit, place, and timing are brought into line.
