Coming Up
Wine work here moves across hospitality, harvest, and cellar, and Glenn Hugo was trained for that overlap at Provenance Vineyards. He then moved into the front-of-house pressure of wine country service as General Manager at Bounty Hunter Wine Bar in Downtown Napa, California, before shifting into production in 2003 as a Harvest Intern at Girard Winery in Napa Valley, California. From there, the cellar became the center of the job: Cellar Master at Girard Winery in Napa Valley, California, then Assistant Winemaker at Girard Winery in Napa Valley, California. From 2004–2010, Hugo also worked as Winemaking Consultant at B.R. Cohn Winery in Sonoma Valley, California. That kind of parallel responsibility points to a career built on continuity, not sidestep promotions: one place, then another, with enough time in each to understand the vineyards, the cellar, and the people around the work. Today, he is winemaker of Girard Winery since 2010 and winemaker of B.R. Cohn Winery since 2018.
Where They Are Now
Since 2018, winemaking at B.R. Cohn Winery in Glen Ellen, in Sonoma Valley, has sat under Hugo’s oversight. The job connects to an earlier relationship with the property and gives daily form to a portfolio that includes small-lot estate wines, vineyard-designated bottlings, and nationally available Silver Label wines. It is a role that depends on memory of site and the discipline to keep the wines legible across different tiers and formats. Girard Winery remains the other long-running line in his work, keeping Hugo anchored in Napa Valley as winemaker there as well. The two roles show a career shaped less by reinvention than by sustained presence: the same regions, the same producers, and the long repetition of vintage work. "Hi, I'm Glenn Hugo, winemaker here at B.R. Cohn Winery in Sonoma." It is a plain introduction, and it fits the job: direct, current, and tied to the cellar rather than to performance.
Signature
Glenn's signature wines include OLIVE HILL ESTATE Cabernet Sauvignon, SONOMA SERIES Cabernet Sauvignon, Silver Label Cabernet Sauvignon, Silver Label Pinot Noir, and Silver Label Chardonnay. Taken together, they show the scope of the job: estate-driven bottlings, regional Cabernet, and the broader range carried by the Silver Label wines.
In Their Words “I am delighted that Glenn has agreed to take on this dual winemaking role.” “Hi, I'm Glenn Hugo, winemaker here at B.R. Cohn Winery in Sonoma.”
Honors
No named awards are cited for Hugo; the recognition in this career arc is expressed through winemaking appointments. The milestones are concrete: Assistant Winemaker at Girard Winery in 2006, winemaker at Girard Winery, and winemaker at B.R. Cohn Winery in 2018. In a field where reputation is often built quietly, over seasons rather than ceremonies, those appointments serve as the clearest markers of achievement.
